The NFL began in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in Canton, Ohio.

The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, between the Dayton Triangles and Columbus Panhandles.

In 1922, the APFA was renamed to the National Football League (NFL)  marking the start of a new era.

Despite rebranding, the NFL struggled with money problems, low crowds, and muddy, uneven fields.
